Family in Hong Kong, estate assets in Shenzhen: where to begin?

Start with the location and type of each asset, then review documents and procedures.

Editorial draft · Pending review by Ruan Zhanwei · 21 October 2026

Begin by listing each asset by its location and type, then check the deceased’s identity, family relationships, wills and other documents. A Hong Kong resident inheriting Shenzhen assets and the administration of a Hong Kong estate require separate analysis and coordination.

Map the assets first

List Shenzhen property, Shenzhen company shares, Hong Kong accounts and other assets, including who holds them and what evidence exists. Do not assume that a person’s identity, an asset’s location and the applicable law are the same question.

Common preparation items

  • Death, marriage and family relationship documents.
  • Wills and other documents that may affect the estate.
  • Property, shares, accounts, liabilities and related records.
  • Procedures already undertaken, documents obtained and current disputes.

Coordinating the two jurisdictions

The Hong Kong Judiciary explains that its probate jurisdiction covers estates located in Hong Kong. Shenzhen assets require separate review of the relevant mainland procedures. Notarisation, authentication or other documentary requirements depend on the receiving institution and the individual matter.

What can be discussed in advance?

Review how wills and other arrangements in different jurisdictions fit together, check asset inventories and executor arrangements, and reduce unnecessary conflicts between documents. Obtain advice from Hong Kong-qualified lawyers on Hong Kong legal issues.
